Equine Medical Services is an equine-exclusive practice set on ten acres in Silverhill Alabama. The services we offer include, equine reproduction, equine dentistry, lameness, pre purchase exams, semen freezing, and horse boarding. Equine Medicine

Preventive equine medicine encompasses all that we do to help prevent disease and maintain optimum health. This includes developing a proper vaccination and deworming program for a horse’s individual situation. A three-year-old living at a training stable and showing every few weeks has different stresses and risk factors than does a twenty-year-old living in a back yard. Each horse has different needs and exposure to disease and parasites that should be taken into consideration to allow it to be as healthy as possible.

Each horse also has different nutritional requirements and changing needs for supplements. A yearly physical examination is an opportunity to evaluate not only an individual’s health and care, but the management and nutritional factors that play a major role in equine health. Problems can be identified and controlled before they become serious. Often, hoof issues are addressed and a farrier consulted before the problem gets out of hand. Many skin and eye issues that are not apparent to an owner can be identified and controlled before becoming serious.

A yearly dental exam is of paramount importance both for youngsters just beginning to work with bits and for older horses with age-related dental abnormalities. A missed dental abnormality will only become worse over time and cause adjacent and opposing teeth to become abnormal as well.

Equine Reproduction

We accept mares for evaluation of infertility as well as consult on natural breeding practices for your own breeding program. We perform several embryo transfers each year and can make arrangements for embryo freezing and storage for future use or sale.

Equine Dentistry

We preform routine dental care procedures to prevent premature tooth loss, promote more complete utilization of feed, and decrease impaction colic and chokes.

Pre Purchase Exam

If you think you have just found your next horse, please let us evaluate him for you, before you write that check! Whether it’s a pony for your child or your next national level competitor, it makes sense to schedule a thorough physical exam and lameness exam before you buy.

Lameness

We have a long-standing relationship with many area farriers and often x-ray feet to evaluate bone and hoof capsule alignment so the farrier can be exactly sure of the foot structure on problematic horses.

Semen Freezing

We are an AKC-approved frozen semen storage facility and routinely freeze and store semen from purebred dogs. Our association with small animal practitioners in the area allows us to receive and manage frozen semen for both surgical and nonsurgical insemination.

Horse Boarding and Lay-Ups

We offer limited term pasture horse boarding as well as lay-up care when your horse is recovering from an injury and needs physical therapy or intensive wound management. We have many broodmares in and out during breeding season and often board mares for a month or two while their foals are weaned at home.

Digatherm Digital Thermal Imaging

Thermal imaging is a new tool equine veterinarians can use to identify injuries and other sensitive areas that may not reveal the injury until weeks later. Think of equine thermal imaging as an x-ray machine into the tissue of the horse. This state of the art technology is helping reduce “masked injuries”.

Dog Obedience Classes

Dr. Bercier enjoys helping dog owners learn to teach their own pets, and learn to properly interact with their dogs, as well as others they may come across in public.
